Terrapin Hedgehogs Welcomes You!
3/4/2010 I am once again accepting names for the waitlist. To do so feel free to fill out a questionnaire. I'll be in touch then, and will let you know when I have babies available. I do have some litters, and expect to be alerting the waitlist on, or around, the 15th of March.

With these babies you can be sure you're getting a healthy, well socialized pet worth waiting for!

Please read the ENTIRE front page before contacting us to make an appointment.

HEDGEHOG CONFORMATION SHOW, GAMES, AND MORE!!
June 19th, 2010 in Bel Air, MD!!!
You can register and get more details at
www.midatlantichhshow.com

A non-refundable $75 deposit will hold the baby until he/she is weaned and ready to go home with you. The deposit is applied to the balance, so, for example, a $200 hedgehog would be reserved at $75, and have the remainder of $125 due at pick up. Deposits CANNOT be made without filling out a questionnaire and specifying a specific baby.

Stasi will contact you upon receipt of the questionnaire, typically within 24 hours. At that time she can answer any questions, set up an appointment if desired, and update you on the babies. *If* you have not heard back within 24 hours, feel free to contact us either by email or phone at 410-322-3650.

Hedgehogs are wonderful animals, and can be terrific pets, but are not for everyone. If after doing some research you feel that a hedgehog is right for you, please fill out a new owner questionnaire, and we will try to match you with the right hedgehog. Feel free to contact us with any questions.

If you are unsure a hedgehog is the right pet for you, and would like to come for some hands on experience, feel free to contact us. As with any other appointment, a filled out questionnaire is required.

Recommended cage size is at least 3 square feet. Thats with a solid PLASTIC PREFERRED! floor, all on one level. Hedgehogs do climb, but can fall easily, so we recommend that you keep them on one level.
I recommend that you keep your hedgehog on the same foods as we feed here. That's a mix of dry cat foods, not only does it keep them on a well balanced diet, it also makes for less picky hedgehogs. You can either purchase the food through me, or, make your own version.

I will not sell hedgehogs to people in illegal states - those include AZ, CA, GA, HI, PA, VT. Please do not ask for an exception, and contact your Fish and Wildlife for more information.

Why Should You Buy From Terrapin Hedgehogs?
(written in conjunction with Hamor Hollow)
With all the hedgehogs that are available in pet stores, you might be wondering why you should take the extra time to contact us and go out of your way to get one of our hedgehogs. Below are a few points we would like to make about the average pet store hedgehog. While you might be lucky enough to find one that is both friendly and healthy, Do you really want to take that risk?

* Our hedgehogs are socialized and used to people. While we can't guarantee the personality of any individual hedgehog (some are runners, explores, cuddlers, etc.), we do guarantee that you will get a hedgehog that is typically much friendlier then one you would find at a pet store. Temperament is our highest concern when we match our breeding pairs, and babies are held from an early age to ensure they are friendly and used to people.

* Our hedgehogs are weaned at no earlier then 6 weeks of age. They are kept in our nursery for an additional week to be sure that the hedgehog is eating kibble and drinking from a water bottle. This ensures that your baby has received adequate nutrition from his/her mother and makes for a much healthier hedgehog in the long run. Many of the hedgehogs you find in pet stores are taken from their mom by 3 weeks and are already at pet stores by 4 weeks of age. Due to lack of nutrition and stunted development, many of these babies get sick and end up at the vet before they are 6 weeks old. Unfortunately the damage done by weaning a baby to early is nearly impossibly to undo, and if they survive, many of these hedgehogs end up with severe long term problems.

* Our hedgehogs are kept in clean cages and in good conditions. Many pet stores keep their hedgehogs in overcrowded 10g aquariums with substandard conditions. These hedgehogs are either poked and yelled at all day by excited visitors, or completely ignored because store employees are afraid of them. The hedgehogs are typically not given a hideout so that they will be visible to potential buyers, and they do not receive any toys to occupy them. In a truly bad situation, they may live on dirty shavings, eat dirty food, or drink from water bottles sprouting mold. They learn to fear the loud voices and screaming children who poke at them, and even with proper care, they may never become trusting and friendly hedgehogs. Often male and female hedgehogs are kept in the same cage, and buyers could unknowingly end up with an underage pregnant female.

* Our babies are kept in 90 qt Sterilites so that they have room to roam and play. They have tubes and toys to play with and a hideout to retreat to when they need to rest. Bedding, food, and water is changed on a regular basis to keep the cage free of poop, mildew, mold, and germs. Males are separated from females by 6 weeks of age to ensure that none of our buyers get an unwelcome surprise (pregnancy in an immature female could result in stunted growth, stillborn or cannibalized babies, or death of the mother due to birthing complications). Our babies learn that people are friendly, and they will often occasionally seek out human interaction.
* We carefully plan our breedings and do not ever allow our animals to free breed. Unfortunately, we've heard horror stories about some pet stores and hedgehog mills who put all of their hedgehogs in a big tub and allow them to randomly breed with the mate of their choosing. This can potentially lead to multiple generations of inbreeding as well as long term health problems.

* Our breedings are planned very carefully and we often consult with fellow breeders when matching our pairs. We keep detailed pedigrees on site, and most parents are available for prospective buyers to meet. Upon purchase, we will provide you with your hedgehog's parents' official names and his/ her date of birth.
* We offer pre-sale support. A hedgehog can be a sharp pet and may not be the right pet for you and your family. We would rather you figure this out before making a purchase, so we encourage those people who are interested in learning about hedgehogs to make an appointment and visit our facility. We will show you how to pick up and handle a hedgehog, and go over all the things you need to know to care for a hedgehog. If you discover your love for hedgehogs is true and you are smitten with a particular quill ball, you can leave a $50 deposit and we can hold your baby while you get set up and ready to bring him/ her home.

* We offer post-sale support to help you and your hedgehog while s/he adjusts to his/her new home. We will explain what to expect when your hedgehog goes through quilling (adult quills coming in) and how you should properly address other care issues. You will receive a hedgehog sleep sack and toy, two-week starter supply of food, and an information packet.

The Basics:

Pricing - 'Standard'*males are $190 and females are $200 - *Standard coloration includes cinnacot, brown, chocolate - both the white belly and Algerian colors.*

Lineage is provided with all babies including parents' names and birth dates, hedgehog sleep sack and toy, two-week starter supply of food, and an information packet. The Hedgehog Primer by Antigone Means-Burleson is available for an additional $10.

Our hedgehogs are in high demand so, if you are interested, contact us now. To expedite the process be sure to fill out our questionnaire and include your name, address, telephone number, and a valid email address. You may also call us at 410-322-3650 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it us if you have any additional questions, however, email is typically answered more quickly than phone calls.

We are able to ship to major airports. Shipping costs vary, depending on the destination, but typically are an additional $220-$350. This charge includes a health certificate, kennel and airline charges. Please contact for more information.

We don't advocate giving a live animal as a surprise gift so we request that the primary caretaker or recipient be present when the hedgehog is picked up to receive a lesson on proper care and handling. We believe that children can make great hedgehog owners as long as a parent is actively involved. If your child is asking for a hedgehog please call us and we will be glad to discuss care requirements with you to help you decide if a hedgehog will fit into your family. We want to make sure your decision is in the best interest of both your family and the hedgehog and we would be more than glad to schedule a visit so that you and your family can interact with and learn about hedgehogs.
